Hope script with anchor on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo reads 'hope' in a thin, flowing script, with a small anchor drawn below the final letters. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink appears pale against the skin. The photograph is taken from above, showing the hand raised and the inner wrist in the centre of the frame.

In the morning she walked out to the end of the pier with the letter in her pocket and the wind pulling at her hair. A trawler was coming in slow past the breakwater, low in the water, and she stood there until she could see the men on her deck. None of them was him. She stayed anyway, one hand flat against her wrist where the cold had got into the bone, and waited for the next one.
