Black script tattoo reading Mrs across a finger, beside a diamond engagement ring and wedding band.

Mrs script tattoo on a finger

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand with the word Mrs written in black cursive script across the middle finger. Two stacked rings with diamond-set bands sit on the finger next to the lettering. The ink is solid black with a slightly soft edge, and the warm light falls across the hand against a dark interior background.

"Leave the surname off the bill," she said. "Just the Mrs. Nobody reads a poster past the second line anyway."

I did as she asked, though it went against everything my old master taught me about lettering. A word with nothing after it looks like a rumour. She had her rings on, the wide band and the stone her husband bought her in Blackpool the year the show still had lions, and she turned them round and round on her finger while the paint dried in the dusk.

When the lights came on she didn't go to the gate. She stood with her hand flat against the wet shutter, and when she lifted it there was a faint print on the lower edge of the letters, five fingers spread like someone wanting to be counted. I expected her to be cross. Instead she laughed quietly and said the rain would soften it by Sunday, and by then the men from Leeds would have their own name painted over the top.
