Fight it script with black ribbon design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A black script design reading "Fight it" on a plain white background, with the letters in a flowing calligraphic style. A black ribbon loops at the top right and its tail sweeps down into the first letters of the word. The design is in solid black linework with no shading, and the composition is centred and open.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tom, the ribbon I sent you in March was never meant for mourning, whatever Mrs Pell at the draper's told the whole of Hebden Bridge. I bought the yard of black silk from her counter because it was the only ribbon left that would hold a knot in wet weather, and I meant to tie it to the bell rope at St Oswin's for the Whitsun ringers. She cut it with her big shears, wrapped it in brown paper and asked no questions, which is more than I can say for the vicar.

The ringers were a rough lot that spring. Old Alfie Crook had his wrist strapped and would not sit down, and the girl from the mill, Ada, kept counting the changes aloud as if the numbers could hold her steady. I wrote the words on the inside of the tower door in chalk, the way you taught me to letter a board, two strokes to every curl. FIGHT IT, I put, then felt foolish, rubbed out the capitals and wrote them small, the way a person speaks to a horse.

On the Sunday the loose end of the ribbon slipped off the rope and went up into the rafters on the draught, and Alfie swore the bell had called it up for itself. Nobody took it down. It is still there, I am told, trailing over the first letters of those words like a finger keeping its place. Come up in the autumn and see it for yourself. You can tell me then whether the knot held.
