Three arrow designs with black script lettering reading freedom, hope and love, with teal accents, shown as a drawn tattoo design without a body placement.

Freedom, hope and love arrow script designs

Lettering · Mixed · Flash

Three drawn arrows each carry a word in flowing black script: freedom, hope and love, from top to bottom. The arrows use thin black outlines and simple feathering, with teal fills or tips on the fletching. The words are set on white, with the shafts running into the lettering and ending in arrowheads.

The river had taken the bridge in the night, and by morning Ebba of Carrow had three arrows left and a son on the far bank. The king's riders were on her side, their torches guttering in the mist. She sat on the wet stones and drew the first arrow from her quiver, the one whose fletching she had dyed the green of kingfisher wings, and she knotted a length of flax to its shaft.

She shot it low over the current. It fell into the reeds beyond the bank, and her son waded out to pull it free, the flax paying out behind it like thread through a needle. He tied the line to an alder and hauled until the rope sang. That was freedom, though nobody on either bank would have called it that yet.

The second arrow she sent high. The riders looked up at it, as men always do, and while they watched the sky she was already moving along the bank with her bow over her shoulder. That was hope, and it was thinner than the first, but it held her steady for the length of a bend.

She had one arrow left, plain ash with a black point, and she did not aim it at anything. She held it a long while, turning it in the grey light. Then she gave it across the rope to her son, who took it in both hands and did not let go. That was love, the only one of the three that has to be carried by someone.
