Infinity and love script on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a bare ankle, with the foot resting in a platform heel on a fluffy rug. The tattoo is a thin, single-line infinity symbol with the word love written in cursive script through the loop. The black ink is crisp and even, and the tattoo sits small and centred on the ankle against the soft background.

Dear Marta, the new stamp finally arrived from the ministry, a rubber thing shaped like a figure eight that the senior officers insist on calling the lazy eight. I have used it on the wrong forms all week, so forgive the smudges on this one. Ink does not sit well on the damp paper they send us out here, but the thin line of it holds if you press lightly and do not hurry.

Nobody crosses at Ferrin Bridge without a reason, and most of the reasons are dull. A lorry of cabbages. A surveyor with forty tubes of soil. Last Thursday, though, a man in a grey coat put a postcard on my counter and asked whether I could mark it. The card showed a single unbroken curve, the sign for forever, and someone had written the word love across the middle of the loop in a careful hand. He said his daughter had sent it from the other side, that he had carried it since spring, and that he would like the stamp to go right through the word, so the pen and the rubber would become one thing.
I told him the regulations forbid decoration on documents. He nodded as though he had expected that, and waited. So I took the stamp, dabbed it lightly and pressed. When I lifted it, the ink had gone clean through the loop without a gap, every stroke sharp and even, and the word sat inside the figure eight as if it had always been written there. He folded the card into his coat and walked back across the bridge without once looking at the wire.
I am still thinking about it. Come and see me at the crossing in autumn and I will show you the stamp. I have kept a spare pad beside my ledger, and I have a feeling I will need it again.
