Comic book sleeve with superhero faces and POW
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The sleeve is built from comic panels featuring a masked superhero face with a star emblem, a green figure at the top, a skull and a yellow-costumed figure lower down. Bold black outlines and flat areas of colour are used throughout, with sound effect lettering such as POW and BOOM set in burst shapes. The design runs the full length of the arm in a vertical collage, and the photo shows it from two angles on a dark background.

The last train out of Halsworth was already announcing itself when Dilys Varney lifted the lid of the tin trunk on platform four and found the bundles still tied with bakers' string. Ray from the ticket office leaned over her shoulder, jangling his keys, and said the lost property men would only take it if she signed for it first. She didn't sign. She untied the top bundle instead and found a cover painted in hot reds and blues: the Star Sentinel, his shield a five-pointed star, his jaw set like a locked gate, and across the corner a burst of yellow lettering that said POW.

Her brother Tommy had drawn them all, in biro and then in gouache when his wages allowed it. She read them aloud to Ray while the platform clock ticked toward departure. There was Mouldwort, a green-faced swamp villain who bled slime through every panel, and the Vaultmaster, a skull in a black cloak who lived in the cellar of the old goods shed. There was Quillan, a yellow-costumed acrobat who swung from signal gantries and landed with a BOOM that Tommy had inked so hard the page had torn. Each frame ran into the next, so that a punch in one became a shadow in another, and Dilys felt the story pull her along the platform the way the tracks pulled the carriages.
On the final page the panels stopped short of the edge of the paper, and in the last empty frame Tommy had drawn only a shield with no face inside it. Dilys read the caption twice. Then she took the pencil from behind Ray's ear, sketched a jaw and a grin, and tucked the page into her coat as the guard blew his whistle. Ray shouted that she'd missed the lost property deadline. Dilys climbed aboard, found a window seat, and wrote BOOM across the glass in her own careful capitals, just to see whether he'd laugh.
