Horror face and silhouetted figure on a limb
Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo
A large, realistic face with pale skin, wide white eyes, and an open, distorted mouth fills the upper section, framed by dark, tousled hair. Below, a dark silhouette of a man in a hat and long coat stands beside a street lamp against a glowing yellow and green background. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong contrast between the dark shadows and the soft, luminous backdrop.

At twenty to five the flour still hung in the air of Pell's Bakery like the last of a snowfall, and Marta Lindqvist had been awake long enough to stop noticing the cold in her fingers. The proving drawers were warm. The first tray of rye had just gone in when she saw him through the window, standing under the lamp post on the far side of Cottage Row, exactly where he had stood the previous three mornings.

He was tall, hat brim low, his long coat hanging straight to his shins, and he held a case at his side as though waiting for a bus that had stopped running years ago. On Monday Marta had decided he was a locum from the hospital. On Tuesday she had decided he was a man who had lost his dog. She had not decided anything about the lamp light, which pooled on the pavement around his boots and stopped there, as if it had been told not to climb.
At five she carried a tray of cooling loaves to the step, meaning only to leave the sour cob for the crows. The street was silent. When she looked up, he had crossed the road without a sound and stood at the foot of her step, close enough that she could see the hat brim was damp. He tipped it. Under it was a face the colour of tallow, eyes milk-white and too wide, mouth open on a word it had forgotten.
"Is it ready?" he said, in the voice of a man who had been asking for a long time. Marta held out the cob. He took it with both hands, very gently, and the shadow he cast on the bricks did not turn with him. She went inside, slid the bolt, and watched through the glass as the lamp outside went dark, though the yellow glow still lay on the pavement exactly where he had stood, waiting for the next morning.
