Horse head tattoo on a shoulder

Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A black line drawing of a horse head in profile sits on the upper back, just below the shoulder. The linework is solid and fairly bold, with the mane drawn as sweeping strokes and shading only on the neck and jaw. The background is a blurred green paddock with horses grazing, and the subject wears a black and white striped top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Now sit close, because the wind off Scarrow Head likes to get into a story and spoil it. Every week for twenty-two years a grey mare called Marrow walked the causeway from the landing stage with two drums of paraffin strapped either side of her, and every week she stopped at the same stone, turned her head to the tower and blew out through her nose as if she were scolding it. Old Tobias Pell, who kept the light, swore she was counting the steps.

The winter Tobias died, the mare would not go up. The new keeper, a Mrs Hanna Dray with flour on her sleeves, tried sugar, tried shouting, tried dragging, and the lamp burned low for three nights while the sea sulked below. On the fourth evening Hanna's girl, Nell, who was nine and had no patience, stood in the mare's path and said, very plainly, that her father had been dead a month and the light did not care who was grieving. Marrow lowered her head and walked straight past her.

The fog came in that same night, thick as wool, and the lamp could not be seen from the boats. Hanna sent Nell up the causeway on foot with a hurricane lantern, and Nell lost the path within twenty yards. She stood still and heard hooves behind her, then felt a warm breath on her neck. Marrow walked ahead, mane lifting in the damp air, ears flicking back to check the girl was following.

They reached the tower with the paraffin, and the light went up like a struck match. Out on the water a fishing boat turned for home, guided by a flame it could see. Nell still tells it, and she always ends the same way: if you ever go down to the paddock at Scarrow, look at the grey mare's head in the sea mist, and you will see she is still watching the light for Tobias.
