Horse outline with devotion quote
Lettering · Black and grey · Photo
A single black outline of a horse head in profile sits in the centre of the frame, drawn with one continuous, even line. Handwritten script lines above and below read as a message about loyalty and devotion, and the greyscale image shows smooth skin around the design.

Frost had kept the yard iron-hard since Tuesday, and Maggie Cole broke the skin of the water trough with the heel of her boot before she let the old grey through the gate. Bramble came slowly now, head low, one hind foot placed with care as though the ground might owe him money. The letter had come on Friday, in the same envelope as the feed bill. Her brother wanted the land sold by spring. He wrote that the horse was an expense, that the vet's bills were a sin, that a knacker in Hexham would take him for less than the price of a good saddle. Maggie read it twice at the kitchen table, then folded it into the tin where her mother kept buttons and birthday cards, and went out to the barn without her coat.
She stood with her forehead against his neck, which smelled of hay and cold iron. In the lantern light she could see the pale ring of white on his jaw, the ridge of his cheekbone, the place where the mane had thinned. Her father had once said a horse remembers the hand that feeds it longer than the hand that strikes it. She had never known whether that was true. She decided, there in the frost, that it did not matter. She would not sell him.
She went back to the house, wrote her brother a single line, and posted it in the morning box before the lorry came. It said only: He stays. Come and see him in the spring.
