The rain had been coming down on Hallam Market since six, and by noon the awnings sagged like wet sails. Tomasz stood behind his trestle table with a tray of carved wooden animals he had not managed to sell all week: giraffes with crooked necks, a hippo with a chipped ear, and a lion cub he had whittled from an offcut of ash and never finished. The cub's mane was only a suggestion of grooves. Nobody wanted a lion that looked unsure of itself.

An old woman stopped at the table, shaking a black umbrella over the cobbles. She ignored the giraffes. She picked up the cub and turned it in her fingers, running her thumb along the back where the spine curled into a leap. 'Who taught you to carve?' she asked. 'Nobody. I watched a man on the pier do it.' 'Then he taught you to make what sells, and not what stands.'
She set the cub down, pressed a coin into his palm for it, and walked off under the dripping canopy. Tomasz meant to shrug it off. Instead he sat with the offcut and his knife, and for the first time that day he stopped trying to please anyone. He cut the mane deep, a proper ridge of ash, and the cub's head lifted until its chin pointed at the grey sky.
When the stalls packed up at dusk, the cub was the last thing on his table. Someone had tucked a card beneath it, written in pencil in small careful letters: Remember who you are. He never learned who had written it. He kept the card in his coat pocket anyway, and it went soft and pale with rain for years.
