By ten past three the corridor on Calder Ward has gone the colour of weak tea, and you are the only one still awake who can hear bay four. Mr Pollard has been ringing for ten minutes. When you reach him he is sitting bolt upright, one hand pressed flat to the blanket as if he is holding the bed down, and his mouth is open in a shape you do not recognise at first.

He is not in pain, he says, not in the way you mean. He is trying to remember how his sister Nell used to call the dogs in off the fell, that long rising note that climbed and broke at the top. You tell him the moon is out. He tells you the moon is out every night, that is the trouble with it. You pull the blind cord and the window fills with white light, the car park lamps gone soft in it, the wet roofs of the bins shining like pewter.

Then he lifts his chin toward the glass and lets the note go. It is thin at first, scraped and almost apologetic, then it finds its width and climbs. Down the corridor a monitor chirps, a trolley stops rolling, and somewhere a woman in bay six laughs out loud in her sleep. Nobody comes to shush him. You stand with your hand on the cord and find you are holding your breath, listening for an answer from somewhere out past the ring road.

It does not come. Mr Pollard lowers his head, looks faintly embarrassed, and asks whether you would fetch him a cup of water with the chill taken off. You do. When you come back he is lying on his side with the moon across the pillow like a lamp someone left on for him, and he is asleep, breathing slow and deep as a dog by a fire.
