Howling wolf and full moon on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf sits with its head raised and jaws open, howling towards the upper left of the frame, set within a large pale moon with soft cratered detail. The fur is rendered with fine, feathered strokes and smooth grey gradients, giving the animal depth and volume against the dark outline of the moon. The tattoo is shown in black and grey ink, filling most of the frame on a person's upper arm, with a hand visible at the top left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last cart had gone down the valley road before dusk, and you stayed behind because the shepherd's boy had not come back from the high pasture. Your lantern smelled of tallow and your boots were wet to the ankle when you reached the edge of Harrow Wood, where the birches stood pale as bone in the grey light. Nobody in Coldmere went past the stile after dark. You went past it anyway.

The path bent around a stand of hollies and then the trees opened onto a clearing, and there the moon hung so low and so large that it seemed to rest on the far ridge like a dish set down on a table. You stopped with your breath caught in your throat. Something sat at the centre of that silver, long-legged and grey as ash, its muzzle lifted towards the sky. It was not howling at you. It was howling at the moon, as a man might call a name across a fell, and the sound went through the wood and back again until the hollies shivered.

The boy was there, curled against the animal's flank, asleep and warm. When the wolf turned its eyes to you they were the colour of pond water under ice, and it did not rise. It only lowered its head, slowly, the way a farmer nods to a neighbour across a field. You understood that the arrangement had been made long ago, by someone who had also stood at that stile with a lantern and a heavy heart.

You lifted the boy onto your shoulder. Behind you the wolf began again, and this time the howl was answered from every ridge in Coldmere, and the village lights, one by one, went out.
