Horseshoe and feathers on a shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

A horseshoe with 'EST 1994' lettering on its band hangs over two shaded feathers tied with a cord, with small turquoise beads along the horseshoe and cord. The left image shows the full design on the shoulder and the right image is a close view of the feathers, showing fine barbs and tonal shading. The tattoo is mostly grey and black with turquoise accents.

Rhian had the ovens roaring by ten to four, the way her father had taught her before he handed over the keys in 1994 and told her the shop would outlast them both so long as the horseshoe stayed nailed above the door. Nobody knew who had first hung it there. It was black with age and the lettering on its band had worn soft, but she still touched it on her way in, the way other people touched a doorframe for luck.

The dough had been folded twice in the night and sat in the proving cupboard like something sleeping. She tipped it onto the bench, dusted it, and listened to the flour settle. Behind the bins two feathers hung from a nail on a length of cord, one grey and one nearly black, a turquoise bead knotted among them. Her mother had tied them there the winter Rhian took the lease, insisting a feather in a kitchen kept the bread from going flat. Rhian had never decided whether she believed it.

The letter from the agent lay under the sugar tin. Two offers, a deadline, a phrase about modernising the premises. She read it twice with flour on her thumbs, then turned it face down and reached for the lame.

She scored the first loaf in a single curve, a horseshoe, wider at the heels than she meant. Steam rose when she slid it into the oven. By the time the window turned from black to the colour of weak tea, the bread had come out gold, and the feathers stirred in the draught from the door as if someone had just come in and gone straight out again.
