You were right about the car park. Nobody reunites properly in a car park, they just stand by their hatchbacks with their keys out, pretending the evening is going on forever. Then Mr Hadley wandered out for a cigarette he swore he had given up, and we all remembered he still owed us the trip to Cliffe Farm. I've got your name in orange biro on the back of the programme, folded in my purse beside a receipt for parking.

Do you remember the summer we were fourteen, when the balloon came down on the hockey pitch during sports day? The envelope hung over the field in panels of cream and rust, scalloped along every seam like a pie crust, and the basket touched the grass so softly that Mrs Okafor assumed it was a prank. The pilot climbed out, asked politely for the gents, and then, when Mr Hadley blew the whistle, handed you a length of loose cord from the rigging as if you'd won something.

I still have that cord. It is knotted in a way I've never managed to undo, and tonight I tried, sitting on the edge of the bath with the tap running, because the reunion made me think about how we all just went our separate ways without ever really landing. Someone at the buffet said you're in Bristol now, flying kites with your nephew. I hope the wind's kind to you.

Come Saturday, I'm driving out to Cliffe. The farm still has its field. If there's a balloon up, I'll wave.
