Hourglass held by a skeletal hand on a calf

Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A bold black outline of an hourglass rests in a skeletal hand that grips its base. The sand chambers are filled with dense stippled dots, while the frame and hand are solid black linework. The tattoo is shown in greyscale on a smooth calf against a textured grey background.

Now sit close, you lot, because the sand in this one runs slow. Down at Porthcolm, where the gulls quarrel over the fish-market roof, there was a glassblower called Ada Penhallow who made the glasses the ships carried. Every watch aboard the Morwenna was timed by one of her hourglasses, and every one she made she filled with the grey dust off the quay, because she said sea-sand ran too quick and wet.

Her father had been a ferryman. He never once came home late, and he never once came home early, and that, Ada said, was the trouble with him: he kept his hours too well. When the fog came in off the bar and the Morwenna failed to tie up, she stood at the harbour wall with a glass in each hand and turned them over and over, counting.

Mind the hand, now. Bony as a gutted gull, and it held the glass by the foot the way you'd hold a child who was thinking of running. She had carved it from a bit of driftwood and pinned it to the wall above her bench, for she had seen what hands like that did with time. They did not hurry it. They only let it fall.

On the third night the fog lifted at dawn and the Morwenna came in under full sail, every man aboard alive and cursing the tide. Ada turned the last glass over on the quay, watched the dark grains drift down, and found she had nothing left to count. She put the glass in her apron pocket and went to find the kettle.
