The wolf came down from the hills the winter the river froze solid, and it did not hunt the sheep in the low fields the way wolves were supposed to. Instead it walked the lanes of Harrowgate after the lamps were lit, stopping at each crossroads to look up. The shepherd's daughter, Ada Penhallow, followed it one night with a candle in a jam jar, because her mother had said a wolf that looks at the sky is a wolf that is homesick.

At the top of the old quarry road the wolf sat down among the broken stones. Above it the sky was not black but full of colour, blue and teal clouds folded over violet, and pink dust where the stars were thickest. Ada had never seen such a sky over the town. She asked the wolf where it had come from, and the wolf turned its head and looked at her with two blue eyes, steady as lamps in a window.

It did not speak. It lifted one paw and pressed it gently against her coat, over the place where her heart was, and she felt the cold of the night go out of her hands. When she looked again the clouds had shifted, and there was a bright star sitting exactly where the wolf's nose should have been. The wolf was gone, but the stars above the quarry road have burned a little brighter ever since, and the town now says that anyone lost in the lanes only has to find the wolf in the sky to find their way home.
