Wolf head with watercolour wash on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A wolf's head with grey fur and green eyes is rendered realistically on the right side of the image, with a soft watercolour wash of blue, green and purple fading into the background. Thin black geometric triangle lines cross the design, and the left panel shows the same tattoo from another angle. The composition fills the upper arm and shoulder area against a dark backdrop.

Dear Nell,

The fog came in on Tuesday and has not left. From the gallery I can see nothing but the lamp turning its slow white thought into grey, and somewhere below it the wash of water on the skerries. Mr Calloway came out on the supply boat with his paints and a case of brushes wrapped in oilcloth, and he has spent three days trying to catch the light on the lens. He says the prisms throw triangles across the wall of the watch room, and he has been tracing them in ink, line by line, until the paper looks like a net.
Last night he showed me what he had made of it. He had mixed blues into the wet paper so they bled into one another, green where the sea goes under the rock, a purple bruise along the edge where the dusk sits. In the middle he had left a shape he said he could not finish. Grey fur, pale at the throat, and two eyes he had not yet painted. I asked him what it was. He said it was the wolf that had been following the boat since Oban, keeping to the rocks at low tide, never once close enough to be seen clearly. The crew swore to it.
I told him there were no wolves on this island, that the last was shot before my grandfather was born. He only smiled and dipped his finest brush, and I watched the colour rise through the paper as if something were breathing under it.
This morning the fog lifted for an hour. On the lower rock, at the waterline, a grey shape stood with its head turned toward the lamp. When I blinked it was gone, but the water was lit with three bright triangles of light, and the painting on the bench had two green eyes looking back at me.
Keep the lamp burning for me. I will be home at the turn of the month.
Yours, Tom
