Snail and crystals tattoo design

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A line drawing of a snail with a decorative, scalloped shell, set beside faceted crystals and curling scrolls. The linework is bold black ink with fine detail in the shell patterns, and grey shading gives the shell and crystals some depth. The design is centred on a white background with a faint pencil underdrawing visible around the edges.

Old Mags Tully kept the lamp at Scarrow Head for forty winters and never let it gutter. Her husband had gone down off the black rocks below the tower in a February gale, and she had not turned her back on the water since. She trimmed the wick at dusk and again at midnight, and the fishing boats learned to steer by the flash of her light.

In the wet spring the herring failed, a snail came up the tower stair. Nobody saw it climb. It left a silver road on every step, and when Mags found it on the gallery in the grey hour before dawn, its shell was scalloped like a pie crust and its foot was dusted with crystal from the quarry at Hallow Scree. The crystals were faceted like glass prisms, and when the lamp caught them they threw small rooms of colour across the railings.

The snail spoke only once. 'The light is only as good as the one who tends it,' it said, 'so rest, and let the stone keep watch.' Then it pressed one crystal from its foot onto the sill and crept back down the stairs, leaving its road to dry. Mags fixed the crystal into the lamp housing, and that night the beam came back brighter than she had known it could. Three boats came in through the fog that week, and every man was counted home.

Mags kept the crystal on the sill for the rest of her years and slept in the afternoons with the door open. When they came to bury her, the snail's silver road still shone on the tower steps, and nobody had the heart to scrub it away.
