Howling wolf with smoke on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf's head is shown in profile with its muzzle raised as if howling, with fur rendered in soft, dark shading. Wispy smoke or cloud forms rise from the top of the design against a dark background. The piece is done entirely in black and grey, with smooth gradients in the smoke and sharper contrast in the fur and muzzle, and it is shown on the forearm.

The oak chips had gone damp by four, so Maud Tickell sent the boy out to the yard with a bucket and told him not to look at the water. He looked anyway. Beyond the drying racks the fleet sat as a row of black hulls on the grey slack of the tide, and beyond them the fog had come in thick enough to swallow the light on the breakwater.

Something answered from the fog. It was not a gull and it was not the horn at Sallow Point. It rose, held, and broke into a long note with a man's throat in it. Maud set down the ladle and said, quite calmly, that it was the grey dog from the Brightwater, and it had not been heard since the winter the Ada Rose went down with all hands.

The boy wanted to ask whether dogs could howl like that, but the smoke was already climbing from the kiln, thick and grey and turning over on itself, and it looked to him less like smoke than a head pushed up towards the sky with its jaw open. Maud fed the fire another armful of oak and watched it with her arms folded. 'He's calling them in,' she said. 'Sailors' dogs always know the sound of their own boats.'

The fog thinned at the mouth of the harbour. Two lamps came round the breakwater, then a third, and the boy counted them twice on his fingers before he ran to tell her. By the time the first hull nosed up to the slip, the smoke had come apart into a long pale mane above the roofs, and Maud was already reaching for the salt.
