Howling wolf with triskele design
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a howling wolf silhouette in brown with its muzzle raised, and a three-spiral triskele shape cut out in cream across the lower body. The wolf has a mottled, distressed texture, and the spirals are solid, smooth shapes without visible shading. The design is set centrally on a pale cream background with a faint paper-like texture.

Sit nearer the fire, the lot of you, and keep your hands out of the ash, because the wind has been waiting all night to hear this and I would not like to disappoint it. The pass had been shut eleven days when Morag Keir counted her guests at the Stag and Lantern and found one more than she had bread for. He was a tinker's boy with a fiddle case and no name he would own to, and he sat with his back to the peat turning a silver coin over his knuckles until the coin went quiet.

Then the wolf began to howl. Not far off, not loud, but low and long, the way a thing sings when it has lost the rest of its pack and means to say so. Every dog in the valley shut up. The boy stood, took his case, and went out into the drift before anyone could tell him the snow would take him.
What he found in the lee of the byre was a grey beast with its muzzle raised to a sky the colour of old pewter, and round its feet the snow had been swept into three great spirals, each turning inward like a thumb pressed into wax. The wolf walked the first curve and the boy followed. It walked the second, and at every turn it stopped and looked at him, as if asking whether he had remembered what he came out to remember. On the third turn he understood that it wanted the coin.
He gave it up. The wolf took the silver in its teeth, laid it at the centre of the spirals, and was gone. At first light Morag found the boy asleep in the byre with his fiddle across his chest, and the snow outside still bore three rings, unbroken, with a single coin set at their heart.
