Tomoe swirl in a circle on tan paper
Japanese · Black and grey · Flash
A bold black outline of a circle contains three curved comma-like swirls that meet at a central point, forming a rotating tomoe motif. The lines are even and solid with no shading, and the design sits off-centre to the right on a plain, grainy tan background. The composition is simple and uncluttered, with the motif as the only subject.

The dust came up off the salt flat at noon, and by the time Nell Harrow saw it she had already let the last goat loose. Three turns, the old carters said, was how a whirl showed its nature: it curled one way round the hub of the world and then folded back on itself, and whoever stood in the middle of the fold would be carried off with the sand.

She had her father's cart, its iron rim cracked, and a barrel of water lashed to the bed that was worth more than the cart. The road to Ansel Wells ran straight as a rule for forty miles and then, out of nowhere, bent. Nell had always thought the bend was a mistake of the surveyors. Now she saw it was the dust making a path around something that did not want to be walked over.
She pulled the brake, climbed down and drew a circle in the crust with the heel of her boot, then three curved strokes inside it, each one curling into the middle like a comma that had decided to stay. Her father had taught her that the swirl must turn against the wind, for a whirl bent away from anything drawn the right way. She set the barrel down in the centre of the shape and sat on it.
The dust went round her and did not take her. When it thinned, the road lay straight again, and the drawing in the crust was still there, its lines already softening at the edges. Nell drove into Ansel Wells by evening and told the well-keeper the road had been bent by a clever woman. He laughed, then filled her barrel for nothing.
