Realistic wolf head design
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A front-facing wolf head with intense, narrowed eyes, a dark nose and a slightly open mouth. The fur is built from fine, layered pencil-like strokes with deep shadows around the eyes, cheeks and ears. The design is drawn in greys on a pale, textured background, with the wolf filling most of the frame.

The wolf came to the fair in the year the big top burned, and nobody could say whose it was. Old Haskett swore it had walked out of the Lincolnshire fens with the mist still on its coat, and that it sat by the generator truck every night with its eyes half shut, watching the boys who worked the rides. The showman's daughter, Nell Cotterill, took to feeding it scraps of gammon from the caravan larder, and by August it would take meat from her hand and no one else's.

The trouble started with the ghost train. Ferris Bell, who ran the tilt-a-whirl, bet a pound he could walk the cable run after dark, and he walked it, and in the morning he was found sitting on the sawdust with his hair gone white at the temples and no memory of the bet. Nell saw the wolf standing over him at dawn. She said its eyes were the colour of wet slate and that they looked at her as though she had been expected.
They moved on at the end of the season, as fairs do, but the wolf did not follow the lorries. Nell found it at the lay-by near Spalding, a long grey shape against the frost, and it did not run. She put down the last of the gammon, and when she straightened up it was gone, and in the snow where it had stood there was a single pale feather, the length of her forearm, lying perfectly still.
