Black lettering tattoo of the HTML tags </head> and <body> in a simple sans-serif style, placed on the upper back below the nape of the neck.

HTML head and body tags across upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the upper back and neck of a person with short hair, seen from behind. Two lines of black text read </head> above <body>, set in a clean, even sans-serif typeface with solid, uniform linework. The ink is black on light skin, and the tattoo sits centrally, with the top of the head cropped out of frame.

The Hull fishing cooperative's website had been built in 2009 by a man who later moved to Spain and never answered email again, so when the skipper rang on a Tuesday to say the catch board showed nothing but white, Dilys Parry knew before she opened the file. She opened it anyway. Someone had been tinkering at midnight and had shifted the closing head tag below the body, so the browser shrugged and drew the whole page as though it had no idea where it began.

She spent the morning with a mug of tea going cold beside the keyboard, reading the source the way her grandmother used to listen to the shipping forecast, hunting for the shape under the words. The structure was simple: a head to hold the title and the styles, then a body where the cod and haddock prices lived. She moved the closing tag back into place, saved, refreshed, and the page returned with its grey banner and its figures intact. Ninety-four stone of landed haddock. A price per box. The name of the boat that had come in at four.

That afternoon she drove down to the quay with a printout, because Owen still preferred paper and said screens lied about the weather. He read it standing on the wet planks, thumb holding the tide table against the wind. "Looks right," he said, and folded it into his jacket without asking what she had changed. She didn't tell him the page had been fine all along, only missing the line that said where it stopped and the real content started.

Behind her the boats came in one after another, gulls wheeling over the fish boxes. On her phone, in the small grey box, the page opened properly with Owen's boat at the top of the list, and she closed the laptop and went to find a cup of tea that was still hot.
