Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

Two lines of black handwritten-style text sit on the back of a neck, reading </head> above <body>. The lettering is drawn with thin, even strokes and no shading. The photograph is black and white, with the subject's hair pulled up at the top and soft daylight falling from the right.

Gerald had left the parish website in a state no one else would touch, and at a quarter to two on a Tuesday, Marta was the only person in the vestry office still awake. The bulletin page loaded its banner, its choir schedule and a scanned photo of the 1911 lychgate, then stopped dead, the browser tab spinning like a nervous dog. She scrolled to the top of the source file and found the trouble within a minute: a head section opened in March and never closed, and below it a body that had been waiting, very politely, for permission to begin.

She typed the closing tag herself, slowly, the way you would sign a cheque you had doubts about. </head>. Then she typed <body> beneath it, saved, and refreshed.

Nothing dramatic happened. The lychgate appeared, then the choir times, then the banner, in the order they had always been meant to arrive. Marta sat back and considered how tidily the thing had been arranged: the scaffolding, the titles, the little script files nobody reads, all shut away so the real content could stand up in daylight. Gerald had known this. His comment beside the head section said as much: 'Keep this short. Let them in.'

She sent the link to the vicar with a note that said only: fixed. Then she went home and slept, and when she woke the first thing she did was check the page on her phone. It was all there, every line of it, loading straight through.
