HTML head and body tags on the neck

Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the back of a person's head and neck, with a khaki cap and dark hair visible above the tattoo. The tattoo reads </head> on the first line and <body> on the second, in solid black ink with clean, even edges. The text is centred on the neck and fills the middle of the frame against a plain grey background.

You have been staring at the same blank page for three nights, the kettle gone cold beside the laptop, while the wind from the car park leans on the window of flat 9 on the eleventh floor of Harrow Court. The residents' association wants a website before the spring meeting, and Mrs Okonedo from number 14 has sent you a list of forty-one demands, the first of which is that the lift notices be legible from the stairwell.

So you build it the way you were taught, from the top of the stack downwards. The head comes first: a title, a character set, a stylesheet that makes the pale blue of the old council brochures a shade less grim. Then you type the closing tag, because the head has to be finished before anything can be said to anyone, and you watch the cursor blink after it like a patient animal. The body waits underneath, empty, with nothing in it but the sentence you have been avoiding: Lift 2 out of order since March.

Around two in the morning the lift shudders into life below you, and you hear it climb, floor by floor, past the sleeping flats, pausing at the eleventh, then carrying on up towards the roof where nobody goes. You type the opening body tag. Under it you write the first line for the page, plain letters with no decoration: The lift is working. Mrs Okonedo can come down to the meeting tonight.
