Sit closer, the fire's only good for one more log, and I'll not be told again that you missed the bit about the tail. Right. Now, the hummingbird that came down over Hollin Wood the winter the mill stopped turning.

It was no bigger than a thumb, Ada Reddaway's grandfather always said, and grey as wet slate except where the light caught its throat. Nobody in Thornwick had seen one before. The bird hung above the frozen millpond, wings going so fast they were only a hum you could feel in your teeth, and it would not settle. Its tail trailed behind in two long threads, forked like a swallow's but thin as cut hair, and where they brushed the ice they left no mark at all.

The miller's boy, Tobias, had a bad chest and a worse temper, and he was the one who went out to the edge of the trees with a dish of sugared water, because his mother said nothing that flew should be left to starve. The bird drank from his palm, and then it spoke, which I will not dress up for you: it said his name, the way his mother said it when she wanted him in for supper. He ran home and told nobody. Some things you keep in your pocket until they are worn smooth.

When the thaw came, Tobias was gone to the city, the mill wheel turned again, and the bird was never seen in Thornwick after. But there's a hummingbird cut into the lintel of the chapel door, wings wide, tail trailing, and if you put your finger on that tail you'll find it worn smooth as a pocket stone. Mind your step on the way out. The lane's iced over.
