Two photos of black script lettering tattoos: "I'm fine" on the back of a leg, and "save me" on an ankle.

"I'm fine" and "save me" script tattoos

Lettering · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The left photo shows the words "I'm fine" in black script on the back of a leg, shown at an angle so the lettering appears rotated. The right photo shows "save me" in black script on an ankle against a grey carpet. Both tattoos use solid black linework with no shading or colour.

The lost property hatch at Carrowmoor station shut at four, but Dilys Pryce always left the last drawer open a while longer, sorting the things nobody had come back for. Umbrellas, a single glove, a Thermos with the cap glued on. Most days she could tell from the shape of a thing what it had been for.

That Tuesday she found two slips of paper folded inside a paperback about lighthouses. Both were torn from the margins of old timetables, both written in the same looping pencil. One said I'm fine, the letters leaning hard to the left as if someone had written them on a moving carriage. The other said save me, shakier, with the e pressed so hard it had torn the paper. She held them up to the lamp and read them through the back, where the words came out the right way round, which unsettled her more than she liked to admit.

She thought about the 6.10 to Lydbridge, the one that stopped at every halt in the county, and about the guard who called out the names of places as though they were apologies. She could not work out which slip had been written first, or whether the second had been an answer to the first or the other way about.

In the end she wrote on the back of a spare ticket, Which one should I post? She put it in an envelope marked Unclaimed, sealed it, and found a stamp in the drawer with the glue gone dry. Then she stood at the hatch a long while before she posted it through the slot in the wall.
