Infinity, exhale, inhale and heart tattoos
Fine line · Neck · Mixed · Photo
The collage shows three separate tattoos on skin. On the left, a pink infinity symbol with the word run sits at the nape of the neck, with a thin, even line. In the centre, the words exhale and inhale are written in black cursive script across two ankles. On the right, a black outline heart pierced by an arrow is shown close up on the skin, with a clean, thin line against a plain background.

Dear Tamsin, the air recycler on Kestrel Deck has started coughing again, so I am writing this by the old lamp in the galley, where the hum is loudest and nobody asks what you are doing. Mother's rule still holds: if you cannot run the loop, you count the breaths instead. Inhale on four, hold on four, exhale on six. The ship's doctor says the six is for the body to remember it is allowed to stop.

Last month they put the new girls on the ring corridor, the one that curls round the spine of the ship like a figure lying on its side. Kit Arrowsmith ran it every shift until her ankles swelled, and she said the loop never ended, which is the whole point of it. Nobody on the ring gets lost. You just keep going, and the walls keep saying the same things back to you.
I found Kit's old ration tin behind the hydroponics panel. Inside was a scrap of card with a heart drawn in pencil, pierced through with an arrow, and beneath it, in her small square hand, Return to sender. I have not decided whether it was a joke or a promise. Either way I have put it in my pocket, next to the lamp oil and the loop map.
So when the recycler coughs tonight I will go out to the ring and run it once for her, and once for you. Breathe in on four. Breathe out on six. If the corridor lights hold we will meet at the hatch on the far side of the circle, where the curve of the ship brings everyone back to the start. Your loving sister, Nell.
