Script word tattoo on side of torso
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop shows a black script word tattooed on bare skin at the side of the torso, with the lower part of the letters cut off by the frame. A white top is lifted over the upper body, and a red hand-drawn circle and arrow point to the tattoo. The linework is solid black with no visible shading, and the lighting is soft and even.

You had the brush loaded before the ferry docked, because the harbour master at Saltmarrow never waited for anyone to ask twice. The sea wall had sunk another hand's width since spring, and the council wanted its warnings repainted in letters tall enough to read from a boat. Nobody wanted them on the gate. They wanted them on the lighthouse, where the tide now came up under the lamp room floor.

Ruth Okonedo, who ran the salvage yard, had left the stencil on your workbench with a pencilled note: Just the one word. Make the first letter hook like a fishing line so people look twice. You did not ask what the word was for. It was short, and it was kind, and you did not think a short kind word needed explaining to people who had lost their roofs in the last surge.
You worked from the top of the scaffold while the gulls argued about the tide. The loops came easily after forty years of lettering signs for shops that no longer existed, and by noon the first three letters stood black against the white stone, leaning slightly into the wind the way your mother's handwriting used to lean. Below you, a boy was sitting on the quay with a crab line and a bucket, reading each letter aloud as it appeared, slowly, as if he were learning to speak.
When the last stroke was done, he looked up at you and asked what it meant. You climbed down, wiped your hands on your coat, and told him the truth, which was that it meant whatever the person reading it needed it to mean that morning. He nodded as though that were a perfectly sensible answer, then went back to his crab, and the word stayed there above the water until the next surge.
