Ice cream cone on an upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A small ice cream cone is shown on the outer upper arm, with a pink scoop and a yellow cone patterned with a waffle grid. The cone and scoop have a thin dark outline, and the simple, flat shading gives a cartoon-like appearance. The tattoo sits centrally on the arm against a plain dark background, with a striped top visible at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been ferrying the freezer up the cut since six, and by the lock at Hythe the strawberry scoops were already slumping in their tub. She wedged it between two coal sacks on the cabin roof and wiped her palms on her apron. Her father called from the tiller that the cones would go soft in this damp. She shouted back that they were waffle cones, not wafers, and he was welcome to eat the soggy ones himself.

For a long while nobody came to the bank. Ducks inspected the hull and a heron stood on one leg in the reeds, looking as if it had been stood up. Then a boy came running along the towpath, shouting for his gran, and a woman with a pushchair said the cones were the only proper ones between Reading and Oxford. Nell had pressed the grid into every batter disc herself before dawn, using the iron her mother had carried home from Lisbon in a handbag.

The boy counted out his coins on the gunwale and came up a penny short. He stared at the little heap as though the penny might appear if he looked hard enough. Her father cut the engine and leaned out. Give him the pink one, Nell, he said. We're not carrying it to Oxford. Nell scooped the last strawberry onto a cone and handed it down. The boy licked the drip before it reached his wrist, grinning at her as if she had invented summer.

When he had gone, Nell looked at the empty tub and the lock gates opening ahead. The barge had been sold at Michaelmas, her father had told her that morning, and this was the last run. She folded the freezer lid shut and listened to the engine take them on towards the sea.
