Imagine script on a wrist
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a single word, imagine, written in thin, flowing script in dark brown ink across the wrist. The linework is delicate and even, with a slight variation in thickness along the strokes. The soft, warm-toned background and shallow depth of field keep the focus on the lettering, with fingers out of focus above it.

You find the word on the back of a petrol receipt, folded into the glovebox of a hire car that smells of someone else's oranges. The handwriting loops and rushes, the ink gone brown where the sun has been at it. Route 95 runs out ahead of you, straight as a ruled line, and the dash clock says the next town is eighty-one miles off.

The woman at the motel desk in Tonopah reads the paper upside down before you can turn it round. She says the word is a dare, the kind people write when they have run out of other things to say. You say you think it is more of a question. She shrugs and charges you for the extra night anyway, which seems fair, because by then you have already decided to stay.
Next morning you walk out past the shuttered diner to where the mesa lifts clear of the heat haze. You try to see the road the way the man who wrote the word must have seen it, a grey ribbon with nothing on either side, and you find that you can. The air wobbles over the tarmac the way the ink must have looked on his cuff when he wrote it.
You take a pen from the desk and add a line under his, in your own hand. Then you fold the receipt twice, tuck it under the wiper of the car for the next stranger, and drive east with the windows down.
