Infinity heart tattoo on the ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a bold infinity symbol merged with a heart outline, drawn as a dark, solid line with grey shading along one side. A second, smaller version of the same design appears on the other leg above a black and grey sock. The image is taken indoors against a wooden table and a plain background, with the tattoo as the main subject.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tether had been running slack since the ninth shift, and Ottilie Marr could hear the fault in its hum. It sat somewhere past the old ring junction, where nobody had walked in forty years. She clipped her tool belt, checked the seal on her visor, and started down the spine of Halden Ring with a torch in her teeth and a spool of grey cable over one shoulder.

The junction was a pinched figure of eight where two cable loops crossed. The metal at the crossing had been folded back on itself so many times that it had settled into the shape of a heart. Someone had scored a pair of initials into the housing with a blade long before the station had a name. Ottilie knelt, pressed her glove to the cold ridge, and felt current travel round one loop, slip through the heart, and come back around the other loop to her palm.

She spliced the break in under an hour. Her closing signal, the one every technician sent before sealing a line, went out along the eastern loop: all clear, returning. Four minutes later the same tone reached her from the western side. She laughed aloud in the empty tube, because the loop ran all the way round the ring and the message had come home to her by the long way.

She pulled the torch from her teeth, wrote her own initials beside the old ones with the tip of a cutter, and sealed the housing. Then she walked back toward the lit hab, following the line that would take her home the same way the signal had come.
