Infinity symbol on the nape of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small infinity symbol is drawn in a thin, even black outline on the back of a person's neck. The linework is simple and unshaded, and the ink looks slightly soft at the edges. The skin tone is warm, and dark hair frames the top of the image while the tattoo sits near the centre.

I asked him what it was on Tuesday, when I carried his tea out in the rain. He said it was the sum of the bay, the way the water runs out past the groyne and comes back by the very same road, never arriving anywhere it hasn't already been. I told him that sounded like something a man says when he has not paid his rent. He laughed so hard he nearly dropped the cup.

This morning the tide went out further than I have ever seen it, and there he was on the flats below the pier, walking the loop with a driftwood stick and dragging the figure of eight through the wet sand. The sea came in behind him, filling each curve in turn, and by the time he reached the start again the whole thing had gone smooth and blank. He stood there a long while. Then he waved up at me as though he had finished something. He went in for his breakfast, and by the time I came down his room was empty and his bag was gone. I have been wondering since whether he meant to show me, or whether it was simply the only way he knew to say goodbye. Your loving sister, Ada.
