Mickey and Minnie outline tattoos on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
Two small tattoos sit side by side on the inside of a wrist, showing the outlined head silhouettes of Mickey and Minnie Mouse. The linework is thin and black, with even, unshaded outlines and no fill apart from Minnie's bow. The bow is coloured red and is the only colour in the image, set against smooth skin and a dark, plain background.

Every reunion at Harrowgate Juniors ended the same way, with someone's coat left over a chair and two old classmates standing near the coat hooks pretending not to be waiting for each other. This year it was Maud Pennock and Eli Store, who had shared a desk for six years and never once said anything true across it. Maud had worn a red bow in her hair then, tied on by her gran every morning. Eli drew mice in the margins of every spelling test, round-eared heads with the ears overlapping the face like two coins dropped on a plate.

Nobody had ever seen Eli colour anything. The only red crayon in Mrs Ashdown's classroom was broken in half and passed between the two of them under the desk lid, and it was always Maud who got the last stub. She used it on the bows, always the bows, and Eli never complained. When the reunion hall lights dimmed and the bunting sagged, he took a folded sheet from his jacket pocket. It was a spelling test from 1997, soft as cloth, with two mice in the corner. One had ears and a plain face. The other had a bow, coloured in so hard the paper had torn.
Maud looked at it for a long time. Then she held out her hand, palm up, and Eli saw she had kept the stub of crayon all these years, worn down to the size of a thumbnail and wrapped in a paper napkin. He pressed the test into her other hand. Neither of them said anything clever. They walked out past the coat hooks together, and the coat stayed where it was on the back of the chair.
