Life goes on script with heartbeat line
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the inner forearm with the words Life goes on written in black cursive script. Beneath the lettering, a thin black line forms a heartbeat trace that runs horizontally across the arm. The ink is solid black with no colour, and the arm is framed closely against a light, softly blurred background.

The ewe had been down in the straw since the lamp was lit, and Abel Thorne had given up hoping she would stand on her own. Snow lay against the byre door and the wind pushed at it like a dog that wanted in. He knelt, pulled his sleeve back, and laid his ear against her side the way his father had taught him, counting the knocks under the wool. The boy, Tom, held the lantern too close and the light jumped across the rafters.

'Is she dead, Grandad?' Tom asked.
'Not while she's counting,' said Abel. He had a saying for most things, and this one came from Mother Sarrow, who kept the cottage past the frozen mill and who once drew a wavering line in chalk on the back of a slate and told him it was the road a heart walks. 'Every creature keeps its own time. You only have to be quiet enough to hear where it's going.'
The lamb came feet first at the turn of the night, grey and slippery, and didn't move. Abel cleared its nose with two fingers and blew softly into its face, and Tom rubbed it with straw until it shook its head and sneezed. The ewe lifted her own head at the noise, then her chest, and finally got her front legs under her as if she had only been resting.
By morning the frost had turned the window into a white sheet. Tom drew a zigzag in it with his thumb, one peak and then a long flat run, and watched the sun reach the glass and begin to melt it. The line ran down and dripped away, and out in the yard the new lamb was already bleating for its mother.
