Infinity symbol and love script on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line infinity symbol runs across the skin and flows into the word love written in a cursive script. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink has softened and faded so it reads as pale grey against the skin. The design sits centred in the frame on a close crop of the wrist and forearm.

The road over Bwlch Carreg was shut three times that winter, and each time Mam sent me up with the lamp oil and a list. I was nine. I learned the old road from the bus shelter at the bottom, where the tarmac crossed itself twice before the summit, and I traced it with my finger on the cold window as if it were a sum that would come out right if I kept going.

At the top, the snowplough man, Dai Gwilym, kept a tin of pencils and wrote the word love on the back of every weather slip he handed me, looping the l so high it nearly touched the next letter. He said a thing that goes round and comes back to where it started is not the same as a thing that stops. I didn't understand him. I copied his loop onto a strip of masking tape so I would remember it.
The tape came off in the bath, and the next spring the new tunnel took the traffic under the mountain and the old road was left to the sheep. Dai retired to Llanberis and sent a postcard with no message, only a figure of eight drawn in biro over a photograph of the pass.
I walked up last October with the postcard in my coat. The cairn at the top was still there. I dipped a finger in the wet snow and drew the loop on the grey stone, and when the snow ran off, the lines stayed a moment, paler than the rock, going round.
