Seaview House has eleven rooms and one rule, painted in my late husband's capitals above the hall mirror: NO GUEST LEAVES WITHOUT SETTLING THE ACCOUNT. Ruth Abney broke it in March. She paid up to the penny, leaving the notes under the saucer on the bureau in Room Four, along with a folded tide table with something pencilled on the back.

The pencilled line read: The sea goes out; it always comes back. I thought it a bit of a dodge at the time. The following spring her sister Joan arrived with a dog-eared book on punctuation and a brass thimble on a string, and asked for Room Four. She said Ruth had taught her the difference between a full stop and a semicolon. A full stop was for when a thing was over, she said, and a semicolon was for when you were not ready to let it go but had to pause for breath.
Joan walked to the end of the groyne every evening and back again, counting the lamps along the front, and each night she came in a little lighter, as if the walking were the part she needed to finish. On her last Sunday she poured a cup of tea from my brown pot, carried it out to the rail, and set it down full to the brim. I watched from the kitchen window until the tide came up over the stones and the cup was gone.
I did not sweep Room Four that autumn. I left the window open and the tide table on the sill. When a new guest asked why the room sat empty, I told her it was only resting, the way a sentence does before the next clause begins.
