Close-up of a blue and grey infinity symbol tattoo with the word Love, a crescent moon with a face and small stars, on the top of a foot.

Infinity, moon and stars on a foot

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

An infinity symbol forms the centre of the design, with the word Love in script running along its lower loop. A crescent moon with a simple face sits on the left, surrounded by outlined stars and small dots. The moon is shaded in blue and grey, while the stars and linework are darker with muted colour accents, and the tattoo is photographed on the top of a foot against a textured carpet.

Dear Kieran, the lift is broken again, so I walked up the eleven floors with the shopping and my knees have been telling me all about it ever since. Your mum says you're sleeping badly in that flat by the river, so I'm sending the old torch you liked and a list of things to look at from your window.

Here's the trick I taught you when you were small. The moon over Hartley Court has a face, a thin crescent with a sleepy mouth, and it hangs right above the bins in the car park. Once it clears the roofline, count the stars that come out after it, nine if the sky is clear, and draw them on the glass with your finger. The condensation keeps them for a minute or two. Then write Love along the bottom, underneath the moon, and it holds until the heating comes on.

Mr Okafor from flat 74 says the council will knock the block down in the spring, and I suppose they'll put up something with no lift at all. But the moon won't mind. It goes round the way the sea does, a long figure of eight over the rooftops, never stopping at the end of anything. I used to think that was sad. Now I think it means nobody is ever left on the wrong side of the sky for long.

So go to the window tonight, draw your nine stars, and tell me if the face is smiling. Mine has been smiling all week, which is more than I can say for the lift. All my love, Nan.
