Heart fishing hook and script on a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a foot resting on dark leather, showing a heart-shaped fishing hook outlined in black with grey shading. A line of cursive script runs beneath it towards the ankle. The tattoo is in greys only, and the framing keeps the design as the clear focus.

Nell, the cook has run out of tinned peaches, so I'm writing this by the galley lamp while the rest of the watch snores in their bunks and the boat rolls us slowly toward Iceland. Don't tell Mam I've been up past two. She'll say I'm turning into Dad, and I've promised myself I won't, not with the sea the way it is this week.

I've been working on something for you in the spare hour between gutting and sleep. Bosun had a dropped hook from the long line, a stout bronze thing with a barb like a cat's claw. I heated it over the stove until it went soft, then bent it round my thumb into a heart. It took three goes. The first one came out looking like a boot, and Ned laughed himself sick on the stairs. The second had a kink where the shank meets the eye, so I filed it smooth with a stone from the fo'c'sle and now it sits proper, all curves, with the point turned in so nothing snags.
Your name is going on the cuff of my oilskin in red thread, but the hook is for you to keep. Hang it in your window where the morning light comes through. When we dock in Hull I'll bring you a real one, bigger, and you can tell me which of us is the bigger fool. Just now the lamp swung and the little heart threw a shadow across the bulkhead, and for a second the whole ship seemed to be steering toward it.
Your brother, Tom
