Infinity symbol on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black infinity symbol is drawn in thin, even linework on the inner forearm, just above the wrist. A gold wristwatch with a metal strap and a white pearl bracelet with a small heart charm sit beside it, and the background is green grass with a pair of sneakers at the bottom of the frame. The ink is black only, and the photograph is taken outdoors in natural light.

The sea had been flat for nine days, so flat the hull seemed to hang rather than move, and Nell Harcourt had been drawing the same shape in the margin of the chart for an hour. It was a lazy figure of eight lying on its side, the loops pinched together where the grease pencil always wandered back to the start. She had filled the corner of the Agulhas sheet with them, and the navigating officer's ruler kept sliding across them on its way to somewhere more useful.

Captain Pruett came up from the saloon with two mugs of tea gone cold and set one down on the chart, away from the smudge. 'You're doing it again.' 'Doing what?' 'That sideways eight. My wife used to draw them on the shopping list, said it meant the milk would never run out.' He tapped the current arrows near the edge of the paper. 'Forty-one days from Cape Town and not a knot of weather worth writing up. You'll wear right through the paper.'
Nell said she had read somewhere that the old navigators called the curve a lemniscate, a line with no end, only passes you went around again. Pruett grunted and said the old navigators had also thought the world was flat, and look how that turned out for everyone who sailed off the edge. He took his tea back up on deck without asking if she wanted her own.
She wrote the day's entry in the log in careful ink. Wind: none. Course: as before. Under Remarks she left the space empty, then drew one loop beside it, and went up to see whether the horizon had moved.
