Triangle band tattoo on the wrist

Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo

A raised fist shows a thin black line encircling the inner wrist, with a row of small triangles along it in red, orange, dark green and black. The linework is fine and crisp, and the triangles are evenly spaced like a bracelet. The background is a blurred canopy of trees in soft daylight, which keeps the focus on the wrist.

Red for the spring path, orange for the bog, dark green for the cairn above the spring, and black for the place where the path stopped being a path at all.

Old Griff had marked the forest this way for forty years, though he never told anyone which colour meant what. He said a stranger reads colour faster than words, and the trees would tell the rest. I thought he was being mysterious until the afternoon the Pell boy went up after the goats and came back down by following the line, touching each triangle as he passed it like beads on a rosary.

We pinned the last one to a larch at the edge of the scree, black side turned toward the sky. Ana said it looked like a fang. I said it looked like a flag that had given up. She laughed and tugged the twine tight, so the whole band hummed when the wind came through, a thin sound like wire fence in frost.

Next morning the mist had gone, and the line ran straight over the ridge, bright against the grey trunks. Nobody had asked us to do it. The boy's mother brought us a loaf wrapped in a tea towel, and Griff simply nodded at the hillside as if the matter were settled.
