Three outline triangles on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the inner forearm of a person wearing a white wristwatch and a thin bracelet, with three small triangles in a diagonal line near the lower arm. The triangles are drawn in thin, single black outlines with no shading. The background is dark and the torso and patterned scarf are out of focus, so the tattoo is the clear focal point.

Dear Tomas,

The boat came in on Tuesday with your letter and the tin of tea you always swore was better than ours, and I have decided you were right, though I shall not say so when you visit. Mr Pryce says the triangles on the north cliff are fading again. Three of them, painted white on the black rock so the fishing boats can find the gap above the reef. Your grandfather put them up the year the Maud went down, and every spring since, somebody has had to climb out with a pot of lime and a brush and put them back.
I went up on Saturday with Ada's boy holding the rope. The first triangle points left, the second points left too, and the third, the lowest, points down toward the water. Your grandfather always said the third was the one that mattered, because it tells you where the safe channel runs. I had never thought about it before. I thought it was just decoration, something a man does when he has too much time and too little sense.
The wind nearly had my hat off at the top. From there you can see the whole coast laid out like the chart in the schoolroom, every rock with its name, and I understood for the first time why he needed three and not one. A single mark tells you where you are. Three in a line tells you which way to turn.
I am staying on, Tomas. Not because of the cliff, though I have grown fond of it. Because the third one points down, and somebody has to keep saying where the water is.
Write soon. Mind the tea.
