Small planet and stars on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a small ringed planet with a tilted ring, accompanied by three four-pointed star outlines arranged around it. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading or fill. The pale skin and dark background keep the simple design clearly in focus.

The optician's back room in Alston smelled of paraffin and cold brass, and on Thursday evenings Mr Pell let you have the telescope if you promised not to breathe on the lens. You promised every week. Nobody else in the town had the patience to sit with a cricked neck until the cloud cleared.

That October the sky finally opened over the fells, and there was Saturn, small and hard and yellow as a boiled sweet. Its ring sat tilted like a hat knocked sideways. You drew it three times on the back of an old ration book before you trusted your hand, then drew the stars around it, four-pointed and unfilled, because Mr Pell said a star was only ever a point you had decided to keep.
Downstairs the wireless was full of the Russians and their little moon beeping across the sky. Your brother said it was the end of the world. Mr Pell said it was a tin can with a radio in it, and that the real sky had been up there all along, not caring who reached it first. You said nothing. You were thinking about the letter from your sister in Leeds offering you a place in a drawing office that made instruments for ships, and how the envelope had sat unopened on the hall table for four days.
On the last night before the train you sat at the kitchen table with the fountain pen and drew the planet on the inside of your wrist, ring and all, then three stars around it, the ink still wet when you pulled your sleeve down. Somewhere past Carlisle the ring would be turning on its own, tilted and patient, and you would only need to lift your arm to check it was still there.
