Infinity symbol with bees and Sisters script

Lettering · Chest · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows an infinity symbol filled with curling scrollwork, with the word Sisters written in cursive script across the right loop. Two small bees, one at the upper left and one above the centre, are shaded in soft yellow, orange and grey. The black linework is clean and the composition is centred on the skin.

The quarrel began over a borrowed blue ribbon, and by Michaelmas the two Tanner girls had not spoken for a full month. Their grandmother kept bees on the common behind the chapel, and she only shrugged when they asked her to take sides. Sisters, she said, are a loop of wool. Pull one end and the other comes along to meet you.

So the bees did the carrying instead. Each morning a honeybee walked along the sill of Agnes's window, dusted yellow, and each afternoon another settled on the rail of Beatrice's wash-house door. Nobody in the lane could say which hive they came from. The girls began to watch for them, and to notice that the bees went back and forth over the hedge without once choosing a side.

On the last day of October, Agnes carried a jar of clover honey down the orchard path. Beatrice was already there, sitting under the crooked pear with the blue ribbon tied round her wrist like a bandage. Neither spoke first. They simply began to walk, one circling left and the other right, round the apple trees and back past the hives, following the bees in a slow figure of eight.

They walked until the light went and their boots were grey with dust. When their grandmother came out with a lantern she found them still going, shoulder to shoulder, the honey jar forgotten on a stump. The path they wore that day still bends through the Tanner orchard in the shape of a loop, and the bees, to this day, never seem to land at the end of it.
