Infinity symbol with birds and love on wrist
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink infinity symbol loops across the inside of a wrist, with the word love written in script inside the right-hand loop and the reference Rom 8:31 beneath it. Three small bird silhouettes sit on the left-hand loop, drawn in solid black. The linework is thin and even, with solid black fills, and the image is a close, straight-on view of the wrist against plain skin.

You are fourteen, and the rain on the covered market at Hallam Cross has found every gap in the corrugated roof. Your mum has sent you for a loaf and a bag of pins, but you stop under the awning of Mr Okonedo's bird stall, where a crate of racing pigeons is being sorted into pairs by a boy with wet hands. He tells you the birds can find their way home from three hundred miles off, and that they only ever get lost when nobody leaves the loft door open for them.

You don't believe him. You buy a paper twist of birdseed anyway, because it is the only thing in the market you can afford that doesn't smell of vinegar, and the boy writes a number on the back of your hand in biro so you can come back and ask about the birds.
Three weeks later the boy is gone and the stall has a new canvas. Your mum is standing in the doorway of the flat with a letter from the council, and you take it from her, fold it small, and carry it to the market the way you carry everything that matters now, in your fist. The rain has stopped. On the rail above the empty crate, a pigeon with a red ring on its leg circles the awning twice, a loop tight as a figure eight, and then comes down beside you as though it has been waiting for someone to open the door.
