Infinity symbol with Dance on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a looped infinity symbol with the word Dance in cursive script running through its centre. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading or colour. The design sits diagonally across the side of a foot and ankle, against plain skin and a blurred background.

Sit nearer the fire, you lot, and mind the draught from the back door, because Mrs Pell never could hang a proper latch. Right. Ada Tennant kept it, and she had a rule that every guest who came down to breakfast had to have danced the night before. Not sensible, I grant you. But the sea was loud that winter and the rooms were cold.

There was a lodger called Mr Lathom, a piano tuner from Leeds, who had come for a fortnight and stayed nine years. Every evening he wound the gramophone in the parlour, and every evening it played the same waltz, the one with the scratch on the seventh bar. He would take Ada's hand, she would tell you, and turn her round the linoleum until the tide came up over the groyne and the lamps went amber. Round and round, never stopping at the end of the tune, because he said the end was only the place where you got bored of counting.
The last night of the season the needle lifted off the record and the room went quiet. Ada said nothing. She simply found she had been turning all along, and when she looked down, the boards under her feet had worn a ring as smooth as a bangle. Lathom had gone out through the back, leaving his coat on the hook and the gramophone still warm. Some say he walked down to the water to see if the tune would carry. Ada never said he did. She only ever said that on quiet nights, if you listened by the stairs, you could hear the seventh bar catch, and then carry on.
