Ada had the post sorted by seven, though the van from Minehead never came before half past. She stood at the gate of Hollin Cottage with the letter for the Ransome farm in her apron pocket and watched the mist lift off the moor like a sheet being drawn from a bed. Something moved on the ridge. A stag, antlers branched like a winter oak, stood where the wall broke, and beside him a doe stepped out of the bracken as if she had been waiting there since the war.

Her grandmother had told her the story when she was small: a stag and doe who ran the moor in a loop, always coming back to the same gap in the wall, because the hunters had once split them and each autumn they found their way home. Ada had laughed at it at fourteen. Now she thought of the telegram that had come to the Ransome boy in March, and how his mother had stood at this gate every morning since.
She walked up the lane with the envelope. The stag did not run. The doe lowered her head to the gap as though reading something in the grass. Mrs Ransome was at the byre door with her sleeves rolled, and when she saw the crest on the corner of the letter she made no sound at all. Ada took her hand and held it against the cold gatepost until the mist had gone from the hill.
Walking home, Ada took the lane that bent back on itself past the old quarry and came out, as it always did, at her own gate. She had never once noticed that it looped. The stag was gone. In the mud at the gap were two sets of prints, one closing into the other, and she stood there a long while trying to work out which way they had been going.
