Infinity symbol with paw and heart
Black and grey · Flash
The design shows a bold, black infinity symbol drawn as a single ribbon-like stroke. A paw print sits in the left loop and an outlined heart sits in the right loop. The image is flat black on white with no shading or colour, and the design is centred and fills the frame.

The snow had been falling since Martinmas, and by the first week of January the lane below Hobb's Croft was gone under it. Ada stood at the byre door with a bucket going cold in her hand and watched the collie, Nell, nose down in the white, working out the way to the lower pasture. Her father would have gone after the ewes himself. He had been under the yew at Saint Oswin's since October, and the farm was a thing the two of them kept lifting between them without ever setting it down.

Nell went out through the gate, round the ash, over the beck bridge, past the byre and back to the gate again, the way she always did when she had counted the flock and found one missing. Ada followed with the lantern. The prints went round in a long lazy figure of eight, the left loop tight around the pen where the ewes bedded, the right loop wide around the orchard wall. Where the two loops crossed at the gatepost, the dog stopped and circled twice, as if she had something to say and had forgotten the words.
The lamb was in the ditch under the hawthorn, blue with cold but breathing. Ada carried it to the kitchen range and wrapped it in her father's coat. Nell lay down against the hearth stone with a sigh that went on for a long time, and when Ada looked again the dog's eyes were open and on her, steady as a heartbeat.
In the morning the thaw had come and the prints were nearly gone, all but one line of them curling round the gatepost. Ada traced it with her boot. It went out, looped, and came back to the same warm door it had started from. She fed the dog first, then the lamb, then herself, and she did not go looking for the end of the road, because the dog had already shown her there wasn't one.
