Ada Penhale lit the oven before the church bell had finished counting four, because her father had always said the first hour of the dough belonged to the dark. She scored the loaves with a blade worn thin as a fingernail, drawing the same long loop over each one: a sideways eight that never ended where it began.

Her mother had called it the walking road. You start at the crossing, go round the left-hand bowl, come back through the middle, round the right, and you are home again without ever having stopped. Ada had asked once what would happen if the road ran out, and her mother had pressed a warm heel of bread into her palm and said the road did not run out, only the people walking it did.

On the morning the frost came early, a stranger knocked at the back door with a sack of flour gone to grey lumps in the rain. He wanted bread for a wedding three valleys away and nothing else. Ada took his coins, gave him the last of the rye, and wrote a name in the crust with a cocktail stick, the letters running through the loop like thread through a needle, so he would know whose loaf it was.

He came back in spring with an empty sack and a second coin, and asked her to bake his mother's name into a loaf too. She did. Ada never learned whether the road turned out true, but she kept the blade, and every dawn she drew the eight before she lit the fire.
