The lift in Carrow House had been broken since March, so on Tuesdays I did the fourteen floors on foot, my bag over one shoulder and my stethoscope looped round my neck like a bad habit. Mrs Adeyemi on the ninth was the reason I kept going. She said nobody else in the block bothered to knock twice.

Mr Pell on the eleventh was different. He was ninety-one, sharp as a tack, and he liked to lie back with his eyes shut and tell me what his heart was doing before I'd got the earpieces in. "Thumping like a man late for the bus," he said that Tuesday, and I laughed, because it was. His chest was clear. I held the bell against his ribs for a long time anyway, counting against my watch, and he pretended not to notice that I was waiting for something to sound wrong.

Nothing did. On the way back down I stopped on the fourteenth floor landing, where the window looks over the canal and the rooftops of the terraces the council knocked down in 1972. A boy was flying a kite from the car park below, the string pulled taut across the wind. I thought about how a heart is only a pump with a bad reputation, and how much of my job is standing still and listening to something ordinary.

When I reached the ground floor my calves were on fire and my phone had three messages from the surgery. I didn't read them. I walked out past the dead lift into the wind and let it take my hair, and I didn't check my watch once.
